Prosper Richland makes history with 56-49 overtime upset of Aubrey

AUBREY, Texas — On August 28, 2026, year after playing a makeshift schedule with no district title or playoff berth at stake, Prosper Richland finally stepped onto the field for the first UIL football game in school history Friday night.

The Raiders made it one to remember.

Prosper Richland built an early lead, weathered a furious Aubrey comeback and scored first in overtime before its defense delivered one final stop to secure a 56-49 victory at Chaparral Memorial Stadium.

The Raiders entered the season opener as roughly 20-point underdogs. They left 1-0 after an offensive performance that produced 494 yards, a defense that created game-changing turnovers and an overtime finish that required contributions from both sides of the ball.

Sophomore running back Darwin Allen rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries, averaging nearly 18 yards per attempt. Junior quarterback Brighton Jones threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns before scoring Prosper Richland’s decisive touchdown in overtime.

Senior Donovan Ross scored the Raiders’ first two offensive touchdowns, Kyson Pettique added a 99-yard fumble-recovery return for a touchdown, Major Reed scored Richland’s fourth touchdown in the second quarter, Allen scored twice in the second half and Nicoy Stewart added a fourth-quarter touchdown before Jones finished the scoring in overtime.

Prosper Richland needed all of it.

Raiders strike first

Richland wasted little time establishing that the point spread meant little once the ball was kicked off.

Ross put the Raiders ahead 7-0 in the first quarter.

Then came one of the biggest swings of the night.

Aubrey drove deep into Prosper Richland territory and was threatening at the goal line when the Chaparrals put the ball on the ground.

Pettique recovered the fumble at the Richland 1-yard line and took it the other way, racing 99 yards for a touchdown.

What appeared moments earlier to be an opportunity for Aubrey to tie the game instead became a 14-0 Prosper Richland lead.

Aubrey responded with a touchdown, but Ross struck again in the second quarter to push the Raiders’ advantage to 21-7.

Later in the quarter, Major Reed scored Richland’s fourth touchdown of the night. The ensuing extra-point attempt was blocked, but the play was far from over. Ross recovered the blocked kick himself and ran it into the end zone for a two-point conversion, turning a broken special-teams play into two more points.

The sequence sent Prosper Richland into halftime with a 29-7 lead.

For a second-year program entering its first UIL game as a substantial underdog, Prosper Richland had controlled the opening half.

Aubrey wasn’t finished.

Allen powers the second half

The Chaparrals scored twice in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 29-20, turning what had been a comfortable Richland lead into a game again.

Allen answered.

The sophomore broke loose for two second-half touchdowns as part of a breakout performance in which he needed only 11 carries to pile up 196 rushing yards. His longest run covered 79 yards.

Allen’s first touchdown extended Prosper Richland’s lead to 36-20 in the third quarter. His second made it 43-20 in the fourth.

But the game was about to change dramatically.

Aubrey answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion to make it 43-28. Stewart then scored for Richland, giving the Raiders a 49-28 fourth-quarter lead.

A 21-point advantage ordinarily would have been enough.

On Friday, it wasn’t.

Aubrey storms back

The Chaparrals scored three consecutive fourth-quarter touchdowns.

What had been a 49-28 Prosper Richland lead became 49-35.

Then 49-42.

Then, finally, 49-49.

Aubrey had erased a three-touchdown deficit and forced overtime.

By then, the pressure had shifted completely.

The Raiders had led from the opening quarter. They had been ahead by 22 points at halftime and by 21 in the fourth quarter. Now Prosper Richland was on the road, tied, with the home team carrying the momentum.

The Raiders had to respond.

They did.

Jones scores, defense finishes it

Jones scored on Richland’s overtime possession, and the extra point put the Raiders back in front, 56-49.

Then a game that had produced 105 points came down to defense.

Aubrey needed a touchdown to keep playing.

Prosper Richland needed one stop.

The Raiders got it.

That final stand capped a demanding night for a defense that had spent much of the second half trying to slow Aubrey’s comeback but had also supplied some of Richland’s most consequential plays.

Senior linebacker Raymond Nyatoti was at the center of that effort.

Nyatoti finished with 20 tackles, two forced fumbles and two tackles for loss while hurrying the Aubrey quarterback three times, consistently finding the football and creating pressure from the middle of the Prosper Richland defense.

Pettique’s 99-yard fumble recovery provided the defense’s biggest contribution on the scoreboard, turning an Aubrey scoring opportunity at one goal line into a Prosper Richland touchdown at the other.

The defense’s final contribution didn’t put points on the board.

It didn’t need to.

One stop ended the game.

From a “renegade schedule” to UIL football

The significance of the victory stretches beyond one dramatic season opener.

Richland High School opened in Prosper in 2025, leaving head coach Kenneth Gilchrist and his staff in an unusual position. The new football program had players and coaches but no traditional UIL district schedule.

So Prosper Richland found games wherever it could.

The Dallas Morning News described the inaugural slate as a “renegade schedule” — essentially a Wild West first season assembled to give a brand-new program the opportunity to play varsity football.

There was no district championship to chase and no playoff berth waiting at the end.

The Raiders finished that inaugural season 3-7.

But those 10 games gave Prosper Richland something a new program badly needed: varsity experience.

The Raiders faced established programs, absorbed the growing pains that come with starting from scratch and began developing the players who would eventually lead Richland into UIL competition.

The lessons from that season were evident Friday when Aubrey turned what looked like a convincing Prosper Richland victory into an overtime fight.

A year ago, the Raiders were simply trying to establish a varsity football program.

Friday night, they had to figure out how to finish a UIL football game.

Production across the field

The numbers illustrate how many contributions it took to get there.

Allen rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Jones threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns and added the decisive overtime score.

Ross scored twice and added an unusual two-point conversion after recovering his own blocked extra-point attempt.

Reed scored Richland’s fourth touchdown of the game in the second quarter.

Stewart found the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Pettique turned a fumble at the Prosper Richland 1-yard line into a 99-yard defensive touchdown.

Nyatoti finished with 20 tackles, two forced fumbles, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries while helping lead a defense that ultimately had to make the game’s final stand.

Prosper Richland accumulated 303 rushing yards and 191 passing yards for 494 yards of offense.

The Raiders scored 29 points before halftime and 20 more in the second half.

Then Aubrey erased a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit and forced Prosper Richland to prove it could win a different kind of game.

Jones put the Raiders back in front.

The defense kept Aubrey out of the end zone.

For a program that spent its inaugural season navigating an unconventional schedule while waiting for its opportunity to enter UIL competition, the first official chapter could hardly have been more dramatic.

Prosper Richland 56, Aubrey 49. Overtime.

A road upset as roughly 20-point underdogs.

And the first UIL football game — and first UIL football victory — in Prosper Richland history.
