Raiders Suffer Tough Loss Against Storied Celina Program
Raiders Battle Through Tough Night at Celina
CELINA, Texas Richland went into Bobcat Stadium Friday night facing one of the toughest tests on its schedule against an undefeated and ranked Celina team.
The Raiders had chances to make it a much tighter game, but missed opportunities in the red zone, injuries and a few costly plays proved difficult to overcome in a 46 to 15 loss.
Celina struck first and built an early 15 to 0 lead, but Richland answered with one of its biggest defensive plays of the season.
Landon Kierdowski forced a Celina fumble, and senior safety Kyson Pettique scooped it up and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown, giving the Raiders a much needed spark late in the first quarter.
For Pettique, it was his second long fumble return for a touchdown this season. Kierdowski made his presence felt defensively before his night was cut short by a broken wrist.
The Raiders continued to create opportunities on offense and moved the ball into Celina territory several times.
The biggest frustration came in the red zone.
Richland reached scoring range on multiple possessions but was unable to consistently finish those drives. Several promising opportunities ended without points, making it difficult to close the gap.
Despite the final score, Richland showed it could move the football.
Quarterback Brighton Jones threw for 246 yards and a touchdown, while senior receiver Donovan Ross had a big night with 10 receptions for 194 yards, averaging more than 19 yards per catch.
The Raiders were also dealing with an already significant injury list entering the game. Losing Kierdowski added another setback for a defense that was forced to adjust personnel throughout the night.
Even with those challenges, Richland continued to create chances on both sides of the ball.
The defense generated another touchdown off a turnover. The passing game produced explosive plays. The offense reached the red zone multiple times.
The difference was converting those opportunities.
Against a ranked opponent, empty possessions and field position mistakes become difficult to overcome.
Friday night also showed where Richland can improve as the season moves forward.
Finishing drives, limiting mistakes and getting healthy will be major priorities during the upcoming bye week.
The timing of the break could be important for a team that has been dealing with injuries throughout the early part of the season. The extra week gives several key players additional time to recover, and Richland could have several important contributors return to the lineup when the Raiders take the field again.
That next challenge will come against a tough Panther Creek team.
The Raiders will have extra time to study the Celina film, clean up the mistakes that left points on the field and prepare for another important district matchup.
Friday was a tough result, but Richland also showed it can create opportunities against high level competition.
Now the focus shifts to getting healthy and turning more of those opportunities into points.
